Eastern Visayas is one of the hotpots of Pyrodinium bloom in the Philippines. The region is composed of five major bays that experienced year-round blooms resulting to red tide bans in most of its areas. The first step in solving this problem is to establish the distribution and succession of phytoplankton community and harmful microalgae that exist in the region. Therefore, the University of the Philippines Visayas Tacloban College together with Samar State University is undertaking a 2-year DOST-PCAARRD funded project entitled "Establishment of Database on Seasonal Variability of Phytoplankton Community in Five HAB-Affected Bays in Region VIIII", under the WATCH HAB R8 Program. In this project, a monitoring activity in the waters of Samar (Irong-Irong, Villareal, and Cambatutay bays), Leyte (Carigara bay), and Biliran (Biliran bay) are conducted simultaneously in each month. Here, we present the marine phytoplankton and dinoflagellates cysts resources, a user friendly repository database for integrating up-to-date information compiled from the monitoring activities. The database is freely accessible and open for everyone. It provides an avenue for phytoplankton studies, understanding HAB dynamics, and provide baseline information that can be used to formulate models that are fine-tune based on the need of the region.
We got copyrighted, again!
The 2nd batch of our phytoplankton micrographs got copyrighted by IPOPHL. The micrographs were now deposited in the National Library of the Philippines.

We got published in FMS
The results from the Year-1 output of the project are now published in Frontiers in Marine Science, Marine Ecosystem Ecology. Congratulations and great work, team!
